Who Can See Your WhatsApp DP, and Can You See Who Viewed It?

A WhatsApp DP is your display picture. Here is who can see it, whether you can see who viewed yours, and what to know about DP viewer apps. Not affiliated with WhatsApp.

A WhatsApp DP is your display picture: the profile photo shown next to your name in chats and on your contact card. People search for ways to see someone's DP, or to find out who looked at theirs. Here is what WhatsApp actually allows.

Who can see your DP

That depends on one setting, which only the owner of the DP controls. WhatsApp's Help Center article How to change your privacy settings says the default is that "Any user can see your profile photo". So unless you changed it, anyone who has your number and opens a chat with you can see it.

The setting lives at Settings > Privacy > Profile photo, with four options:

OptionWho sees the DP
EveryoneAnyone who has your number
My contactsPeople in your own address book
My contacts except...Your contacts, minus the ones you pick
NobodyNo one

The detail that trips people up is My contacts. It means the contacts saved on the owner's phone, not yours. If you are a viewer, you only see the photo if the owner has saved your number. Whether you saved theirs makes no difference. The full steps for changing it are in how to hide your WhatsApp DP from one person or everyone.

A related question is whether a stranger can see your photo when they have your number but you haven't saved theirs. That is covered in can someone see your profile picture if they haven't saved your number. Short version: it follows your setting, and Everyone is the default.

Blocking is a separate control. A blocked contact can be kept from seeing your photo updates, so if you want one person shut out, that is another route besides the privacy setting.

Can you see who viewed your DP?

No. The same Help Center article states plainly: "It's not possible to see who viewed your profile." There is no list of people who looked at your photo, no count, and no notification when someone opens it.

That also means any message, site or app that claims to show you who viewed your DP is not describing a WhatsApp feature. Nothing in WhatsApp's own settings produces that information, so there is nothing real for such a claim to be reporting.

The reverse is true too. When you open someone's DP, WhatsApp does not offer them a way to see that you did.

Why a DP might be missing for you

If you open a chat and see only a grey silhouette, the usual cause is the owner's privacy setting. They may have chosen My contacts, My contacts except..., or Nobody, and you are outside that group. Other causes exist, such as the person never having set a photo. The ordered checks are in WhatsApp DP not showing: why and what to check.

The point that matters here: visibility is decided by the owner's setting. You can't change it from your side. If you really need to see the photo, the honest route is to ask the person, or to ask them to save your number if they use My contacts. Whether saving a number tells the other side anything is answered in will they know you didn't save their number.

Should you use a DP viewer app?

WhatsApp's page About unofficial apps covers apps that connect to WhatsApp without being made by WhatsApp. A DP viewer that asks you to link your account or install a modified version is in that territory. Here is what the page says, in short:

  • Unofficial apps "might carry malware that can steal your data".
  • Using them, or linking your account to one, "violates our Terms of Service".
  • Accounts can be temporarily or permanently banned.
  • WhatsApp does not support them.

So the trade is a bad one. Such an app cannot see who viewed your DP, because that information is not offered by WhatsApp. And what it shows of someone else's photo is still governed by that person's setting. Against that, you take on the risk of malware, stolen data and losing your account. Use WhatsApp itself and the privacy setting it provides.

What to do if you want control of your own DP

  1. Open Settings > Privacy > Profile photo.
  2. Pick the option that fits: My contacts is the usual choice for most people.
  3. If one person is the problem, use My contacts except... and tick them.

That is all the control WhatsApp gives you, and it is enough to decide who sees the photo.

FAQ

Can I see who viewed my WhatsApp DP? No. WhatsApp's Help Center says it is not possible to see who viewed your profile. Treat any claim otherwise with suspicion.

Can I see a DP set to My contacts if I'm not saved? Not through WhatsApp. My contacts uses the owner's address book, so you would need to be saved on their phone, or they would need to change the setting.

Should I use a DP viewer app? No. WhatsApp says unofficial apps might carry malware, violate its Terms of Service, and can lead to a ban. Ask the person or change your own setting instead.

A note on ClickPing
