Can Someone See Your Last Seen and Online If They Haven't Saved Your Number?

Often not. Even on Everyone, WhatsApp shows last seen and online only to people you have messaged or saved. Here is how each setting works. Not affiliated with WhatsApp.

Often not. WhatsApp's Help Center says that if you pick Everyone for last seen or online, only people you have called and messaged before, or have saved as a contact, can see it. Someone you have never been in touch with and have not saved is not on that list.

Want to message someone without saving their number? ClickPing opens the chat for you without adding a contact. Get it on Google Play or the App Store.

What each setting does

The setting lives in Settings > Privacy > Last seen and online.

Your settingWho sees your last seen and online
EveryoneOnly people you have called and messaged before, or have saved as a contact
My contactsOnly contacts from your address book
My contacts except...Your address-book contacts, minus the ones you exclude
NobodyNo one

By default, WhatsApp says users you have saved as a contact or have messaged before can see your last seen and online.

Which direction counts?

  • You saved them: on Everyone or My contacts, they can see your last seen and online.
  • They saved you: the Help Center describes My contacts as contacts from your address book. It does not document the reverse case beyond that, so do not assume that being saved on their phone gives them access.

The reciprocity rule

If you do not share your own last seen or online, you cannot see other people's. Hiding yours hides theirs from you.

Why you cannot see someone's last seen

The Help Center lists these reasons:

  • You do not share your own last seen or online.
  • You have not chatted with them before or saved them as a contact.
  • You might be blocked.
  • They set their privacy to hide it.
  • They have not messaged you before or saved you as a contact.
  • A temporary connection issue.

Blocking

Blocking stops messages, calls and status updates from that person. WhatsApp's Help Center lists being blocked as one possible reason you cannot see last seen.

What "online" means

Online means the person has WhatsApp open and is connected to the internet. It does not mean they have read your message.

Typing

People who are online in a chat with you can see when you are typing.

Your phone number stays visible

WhatsApp says there is no way to hide your phone number. It stays visible even if the recipient has not saved it.

Messaging a number you have not saved

ClickPing opens a chat with a valid WhatsApp number without saving it to your contacts, on Android and iPhone. It does not change your WhatsApp privacy settings. Your last seen and online follow the setting above.
