Can Someone See Your WhatsApp Status or About If They Haven't Saved Your Number?

Status goes to your contacts, never Everyone. About depends on its setting. Here is how each works for someone who has not saved you. Not affiliated with WhatsApp.

Status and About work differently. Your Status cannot be set to Everyone, and by default it is shared with your contacts, so a stranger does not get it automatically. Your About follows its own privacy setting, and WhatsApp's defaults say your contacts can see it.

Want to message someone without saving their number? ClickPing opens the chat for you without adding a contact. Get it on Google Play or the App Store.

About

Set it in Settings > Privacy > About.

Your settingWho sees your About
EveryoneAll users
My contactsOnly contacts from your address book
My contacts except...Your address-book contacts, minus the ones you exclude
NobodyNo one

By default, your contacts can see your About. What an unsaved person sees under the defaults, beyond that sentence, is not documented by the Help Center.

Status

Set it in Settings > Privacy > Status.

  • You cannot set status privacy to Everyone, or share a status with people who do not have your number.
  • Options: My contacts (all contacts), My contacts except..., Only share with....
  • Default: shared with all your contacts.

Mentions

People or groups you mention in a status can see it even if they are not in your audience. You can mention people who are not in your contacts. Mentioned people can reshare it, and your name, profile info and number are not shown on the reshare.

Groups

If you post a status to a group, every member can see it regardless of your status privacy.

An unknown number viewed my status

WhatsApp says that if an unknown phone number can view your status, a contact may have changed their number. If you delete a contact who viewed a status, they stay on the viewers list until it expires.

Which direction counts?

  • You saved them: you can include them in your Status audience, and on My contacts they are in your address book for About.
  • They saved you: for Status, WhatsApp says you can't share a status with people who don't have your number, and it is shared with your contacts by default. For About, the Help Center describes the settings in terms of the owner's address book and does not document what the reverse case changes, so do not assume that being saved on their phone gives them access.

If you cannot see someone's About

The Help Center lists reasons profile information might be hidden: you or they changed privacy settings, both of you need to resync contacts, you are blocked, you need to save them as a contact, they have not messaged you or saved you, or a temporary network issue. Blocking also stops status updates from that person.

Messaging a number you have not saved

ClickPing opens a chat with a valid WhatsApp number without saving it to your contacts, on Android and iPhone. It does not change your WhatsApp privacy settings, so your Status and About follow the settings above.
