When you want to message a number on WhatsApp without saving it to your contacts, you might wonder if typing local digits is enough or if the country code is mandatory.

If you have tried opening a direct chat and hit an error, the country code is usually the missing piece.

The short answer

Yes. Whenever you message a new number without saving it, you need the full international phone number, starting with the country code. WhatsApp is used worldwide, so the number has to say which country it belongs to.

Want to message someone without saving their number? ClickPing opens the chat for you without adding a contact. Get it on Google Play or the App Store.

Why the country code is required

Including the country code tells WhatsApp which country the number is in. A few examples:

  • North America: Country code 1
  • United Kingdom: Country code 44
  • India: Country code 91

Without that prefix, a direct link may not open the right chat, or may show the invalid-number message. See phone number shared via url is invalid.

If you use WhatsApp's click-to-chat links, the rules are exact:

  1. Include the country code first.
  2. Remove the leading zero. Local numbers often begin with a trunk prefix zero (like 07 in the UK). Drop this zero when adding the country code (for example, 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123).
  3. Drop non-digit characters. Omit plus signs (+), hyphens, brackets, or spaces. Use https://wa.me/447700900123.

To add text to the link, see our guide on how to create a WhatsApp link with a pre-filled message.

Letting ClickPing handle the formatting

Cleaning up prefixes and stripping spaces by hand every time you receive a number is tedious.

ClickPing simplifies this. You can paste, type, share, or scan a number with your camera. ClickPing shows when a number is valid (such as displaying "Valid number · United Kingdom") and handles formatting for you.

When ready, ClickPing opens the chat directly in WhatsApp without adding a contact to your address book. It never sends a message for you. ClickPing is an independent app available on Android and iPhone. Not affiliated with WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the plus sign before the country code?

In a wa.me web link, do not include the plus sign. In ClickPing, you paste or type the number and it does the formatting for you.

What happens if I omit the country code?

A direct link without it may not open the chat you expect, or may show the invalid-number message.

If you regularly get handed numbers you'd rather not keep, ClickPing is built for exactly that, on Android and iPhone.
