What the official source says
The German Federal Foreign Office lists these points for a Schengen (C) visa photo on its document page:
- Size: 35 × 45 mm.
- A fully biometric passport photo.
- Taken in front of a white or light background.
- No older than three months.
- Digitally altered passport photos cannot be accepted.
Rules differ by country and by consulate, and your application centre may set its own, so check the page for the country you are applying to before you print or upload.
Schengen visa photo size in cm and inches
When preparing a photo for a Schengen visa application or visa centre portal, dimensions may appear in millimetres, centimetres, or inches:
- 35 × 45 mm
- 3.5 × 4.5 cm
- about 1.38 × 1.77 in
Pixels depend on the portal and the upload limit shown there. Online visa systems and document forms often specify their own minimum or maximum pixel resolution and file size cap. For a breakdown across resolutions like 200, 300, and 600 DPI, see Passport Photo 35x45 mm in Inches and Pixels: Dimensions Guide.
VFS Global and Schengen photo requirements
VFS Global and each embassy publish their own photo rules and upload limits. Check the current page for your visa centre before uploading, as requirements can vary between countries and specific centres.
ResizePing only resizes and crops photos to your chosen dimensions or target file size; you frame the face and background yourself.
Resize and crop to 35 × 45 mm in ResizePing
ResizePing has a Passport photo 35 × 45 mm preset on Android and iPhone.
- Open ResizePing and pick your photo.
- Open Apply preset and choose Passport photo 35 × 45 mm.
- Read the Projected size, then tap Run.
- Check the saved photo before you use it.
The preset gives 413 × 531 px, which is 35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI. It centre-crops the photo to fill that size and never stretches it. No DPI is written to the file, and ResizePing does not centre your face for you, so start from a photo where your face is already centred.
Never uploaded to our servers.
For a shorter walkthrough of the preset, see How to resize a photo to passport size (35x45 mm).
What ResizePing does not do
- It does not check your photo against any visa rule.
- It does not detect faces, change the background or retouch the photo.
- It does not make a photo biometric. If your application needs a printed biometric photo, a photo studio or booth is the safer route.
If the upload also has a KB limit
Some online forms set a file size as well as a photo size. After the preset, switch Mode to Target size and type your limit in Target (KB). See Resize an Image to 20 KB or 50 KB and How to Reduce Photo Size to 100 KB.
