To see a photo's size, open it, then swipe up or tap the info (i) button: the file size shows with the name and resolution. The exact steps differ a little between Android and iPhone, covered below.

Photo the wrong size? ResizePing resizes pictures to a size in KB on your phone. Get it on Google Play or the App Store.

Check the size on Android

  1. Open the photo in Gallery or Google Photos.
  2. Swipe up, or tap the info (i) or Details option.
  3. The file size shows with the name and resolution.

To check a file instead, open Files (for example Files by Google), open the file's menu and choose File info or Details. Menu names vary by phone maker.

Check the size on iPhone

  1. Open the photo in Photos.
  2. Swipe up, or tap the info (i) button.
  3. Recent iOS shows the file size with the name and resolution.

In Files, press and hold the file and choose Get Info. What you see varies by iOS version.

KB, MB and pixels

  • 1 MB is about 1,000 KB, so a 200 KB file is about a fifth of a MB.
  • Pixels are width x height. They are not the file size.
  • Two photos with the same pixels can differ in KB.
  • A form that says 200 KB limits the file. A form that says 200 x 230 px limits the dimensions. Some forms want both.

When to resize

Resize when the size shown is above the form's limit, or below the form's minimum. Sending a photo through some chat apps changes its size, so check the saved copy you will upload.

Resize it

  1. Open ResizePing and pick the photo.
  2. Set Mode to Target size.
  3. Type the KB limit in Target (KB).
  4. Read the projected size shown before you run it, then tap Run.
  5. Check the saved file's size afterwards, using the steps above.

If the target is impossible, ResizePing warns you.

FAQ

  • Where is the file size on my phone? Open the photo and tap the info (i) button or swipe up. In Files, use File info, Details or Get Info.
  • Is a bigger resolution the same as a bigger file? No. Resolution is in pixels, file size is in KB. Check both if the form lists both.
  • Why does the size look different after sharing? Some chat apps change the photo when they send it, so check the saved copy you will upload.

More sizes: exam forms hub, resize a photo to any KB size, reduce photo size to 100 KB and 100 KB photo size in pixels.
