How to Repost a WhatsApp Status: What WhatsApp Allows

WhatsApp has no repost button on every status. See when you can reshare one, what Allow sharing does, and how to share your own status to other apps.

WhatsApp does not put a repost button on every status. What you can reshare depends on how the status reached you. This guide follows WhatsApp's own help pages on status mentions, status privacy and sharing your status to other apps. Not affiliated with WhatsApp.

When you can reshare someone's status

  • You were mentioned in it. WhatsApp says people or groups mentioned in a status can view it and reshare it to their audience. If you were mentioned, you may reshare the content as your own. You can edit it and choose your audience before sharing as usual.
  • The person turned on Allow sharing. In status privacy, WhatsApp says "Allow sharing" lets people who can see the status reshare and forward it.
  • Neither applies. WhatsApp's help pages describe no way to repost it. You can ask the person to mention you or send it to you.

WhatsApp says resharing lets your audience see the content but does not reveal the original poster's name, profile info or phone number.

Share your own status to other apps

On your own status, WhatsApp lists these options: Share to Facebook, Share to Instagram, or Share… and then pick an app. A status shared to a Facebook or Instagram story uses the story privacy settings you already set there. Status sharing needs WhatsApp added to the same Meta Account as a Facebook or Instagram profile. WhatsApp's page lists these steps for Android and iOS.

If you only viewed a status

Reposting and saving are different. A status you have viewed disappears after 24 hours. StatusPing is an Android app that saves statuses you have already viewed in WhatsApp, with an hours-left countdown on each one, and you can share a saved one from the app. Ask before sharing someone else's content.

  • Can I repost every WhatsApp status? No. WhatsApp describes resharing for statuses you were mentioned in and for statuses where the poster turned on Allow sharing.
