If you want an offline ChatGPT alternative on your iPhone, ChatPing can do it with an on-device model. The model downloads once, and after that chat works offline once set up. The model runs on your phone.

Want to try it? ChatPing is on the App Store. ChatPing is its own app and is not ChatGPT. The Android version is not on Google Play yet. Not affiliated with OpenAI, OpenRouter or any model provider.

How to set it up

  1. Install ChatPing from the App Store. There is no account, sign-up or login.
  2. Open the app and pick an on-device model.
  3. Let the model download once. Do this on a connection you are happy to download over.
  4. Chat. After the download, chat with the on-device model works offline once set up.

What works offline and what does not

  • On-device model. The model runs on your phone once downloaded, and it works offline once set up.
  • Cloud models. These need an internet connection. You add your own OpenRouter API key, kept in the iPhone Keychain, and your messages go to the provider you chose. You pay your AI provider directly.

What ChatPing says about running on your phone applies only to the on-device model. Cloud chats go through your chosen provider. If an on-device model fails, ChatPing can offer to retry the message with a cloud model, and that retry follows the cloud rule.

What to know

  • The one-time download comes first. Until it finishes, there is no offline model to chat with.
  • ChatPing is not ChatGPT, and this guide does not claim the same answer quality as ChatGPT.
  • Your chats are stored only on the device, and there is no sync between devices.
  • The app shows banner ads.
  • You can attach PDF, text and image files, dictate by voice, and get streaming replies.

  • Does ChatPing work without internet? The on-device model does, once it has downloaded and you have set it up. Cloud models need internet.
  • Do I need an account? No.
  • Do I need an OpenRouter key? Only for cloud models. The on-device model does not use one.
  • Is it available on Android? Not on Google Play yet.
